natalie elias, lymphoedema therapy

Lymphoedema is the swelling of a body part, usually the arm(s) or leg(s). Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system is not functioning optimally, which causes a build up of excess fluid in the tissues.

LYMPHOEDEMA MAY BE THE RESULT OF:

  • Lymph node removal
  • Tissue damage from radiation therapy
  • Disease or trauma that causes damage to the lymphatic system
  • Chronic overload of the lymphatic system from chronic venous insufficiency
  • Some people are born with dysfunction in their lymphatic system
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF LYMPHOEDEMA MAY INCLUDE:
  • Mild discomfort felt in the body part (lymphoedema does not usually cause severe pain)
  • A feeling of “fullness” or “heaviness”
  • Clothing or jewellery may feel tighter
  • Joint stiffness and restricted range of movement
  • Skin changes

TREATMENT FOR LYMPHOEDEMA should start as soon as possible, because if left untreated, lymphoedema will slowly progress.

CDT includes the following:

    • Manual lymph drainage
    • Compression bandaging and garments
    • Exercise
    • Skin and nail care
  • Self-care
